SINGAPORE : National swimmer Quah Ting Wen is gunning for Joscelin Yeo's 10-year-old 100m freestyle national record when she takes to the pool at the National Age Group Swimming Championship at the Singapore Sports School on Monday.

The 16-year-old has been in blistering form at the three-day championship, which ends Monday, and coach David Lim is confident she can continue her fine form and better Yeo’s 56.05sec mark, which was set at the 1999 SEA Games.

"She is looking good for it," said Lim. "Ting Wen has been swimming very well over the last two days and she is ready to go for the
100m. I think she can do it."

On Saturday, Ting Wen stopped the clock at 25.80s in the 50m freestyle to eclipse Yeo’s national record of 26.13s set in 2005. On Sunday, she set a new 200m freestyle national mark with a time of 2:01.18, bettering Lynette Lim’s record set last year by 0.98sec.

Several new under-17 marks were also set on Sunday. Among the new record holders is Shana Lim, 15, who set a new 50m backstroke mark with her time of 29:20sec, equalling Tao Li’s national record set at the 2006 Asian Games.

Singapore Swimming Association secretary-general Oon Gin Gee said the performances by the national age-group athletes bode well for the sport.

"What is significant is that the records came from several swimmers, and all were homegrown," said Oon. "It looks good for Singapore in our preparations for the major meets ahead of us, including the SEA Games in December."
